CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Crime has remained one of the most persistent social problems faced by urban societies all over the world, and this problem is not an exception for Nigeria. In big cities in Nigeria such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano, there has been a rise in cases of crime such as armed robbery, cyber-crime, kidnapping, drug addiction, and vandalism. Socioeconomic factors have great influence on the behavior of the criminal. Some of the factors include income, employment, education, housing, and provision of social amenities. In cases where such factors are not favorable, people are forced into criminal behavior through the need to survive and improve their social standing.
Newly conducted urban security analyses in Nigeria reveal that high levels of inflation, unemployment, and income inequality have made crime more prevalent in cities due to many people finding it hard to meet their basic requirements in a costly economic environment.
Urbanization in Nigeria has resulted in informal urban settings and overcrowding whereby social control is minimal. Such settings have become fertile grounds for organized crime and gang activities, as well as recruiting members of cybercrime. Literature on urban crime demonstrates a strong correlation between poverty concentration and lack of employment opportunities, especially in the slums of large urban areas.
More than that, technology has created new types of crimes, particularly cyber-crime (“Yahoo Yahoo”) among unemployed youths in urban areas. The conjunction of economic difficulties and technology has transformed the patterns of crime from physical to technological ones. In other words, the analysis of socio-economic factors contributing to the commission of crimes in urban Nigeria is highly necessary..
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The rate of crimes in urban Nigeria has become worrisome for issues of security, economic growth, and the general welfare of Nigerians. Despite several security measures taken by the Nigerian government, crime rates keep increasing in many cities. There are fears about what could be causing these crimes other than ineffective law enforcement.
The most difficult challenge that comes up is socio-economic imbalance. The problem of unemployment among the youths in urban areas has led to many people being economically weak, hence vulnerable to criminal recruitment. Furthermore, the problem of inflation and increased cost of living has lowered people's purchasing power.
There are indications that crime in urban areas of Nigeria is highly correlated with poverty clustering, lack of education and social service facilities. The urban slum areas suffer from high rates of criminal activities because of overcrowding, inadequate policing and poor economic conditions.
Nonetheless, there is inadequate empirical analysis of the effect of various socio-economic factors on crime trends in Nigeria, particularly in relation to current economic trends (2024-2026). The present study attempts to bridge the research gap by investigating the socio-economic determinants of crime in urban areas of Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The primary purpose of the study is to analyze the socioeconomic factors affecting the incidence of crime in urban settings in Nigeria.
Specifically, the study will aim at analyzing the following:
1. The effect of unemployment on the rate of crime in urban Nigeria.
2. The correlation between poverty and criminal behavior in urban settings.
3. The effect of educational attainment on crime.
4. The effect of urbanization and population density on crime.
1.4 Research Questions
These research questions guide the study:
1. What is the impact of unemployment on crime rates in urban Nigeria?
2. What is the link between poverty and criminal behavior in urban settings?
3. What role does the education status play in committing crimes?
4. What is the impact of urbanization and population density on crime in Nigeria?
1.6 Significance of the Study
The significance of the proposed study is multifold.
Firstly, the proposed study will add valuable knowledge to the existing academic literature on criminology, sociology, and urban studies on the socioeconomic reasons of crime in Nigeria.
Secondly, the results of this study will be useful for policymakers like the Ministry of Interior, Nigeria Police Force, and organizations responsible for urban development when devising policies that address crime problems in Nigeria.
Thirdly, the proposed study will be helpful for community leaders, non-governmental organizations, and social workers who work with young people in order to devise interventions to reduce youth participation in crimes through educational and employment programs.
Fourthly, the study will be useful for future researchers who plan to conduct research on urban crime and socioeconomic development in Nigeria and other developing countries..
1.7 Scope of the Study
This research will be conducted on the socioeconomic factors leading to crimes in urban areas within Nigeria. This research shall look at various socioeconomic factors that include unemployment, poverty, education, and urbanization. This research will only be conducted in select urban areas within Nigeria from 2020 to 2026 because of current socioeconomic changes.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
This research might suffer from various limitations like the challenge of getting accurate crime statistics because of underreporting and poor record-keeping by the security agencies. The respondents may also be unwilling to share any confidential information regarding crimes. There could also be limitations in time and finance for collecting the data geographically.
