CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The advent of digital technology has completely revolutionized the field of political communication and campaigning worldwide. Political parties and political candidates are making use of the digital means of communication such as Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, YouTube, and other digital means of communication for the purpose of connecting with voters, propagating their political messages, mobilizing voters, and swaying public opinion in their favor. Digital campaigns are different from traditional campaigns as digital campaigns provide real-time communication, larger outreach of audience, economical campaigns, and personalized political communication (Agbaka, 2025).
Digital campaigning techniques in Nigeria have become popular due to increased internet access and the prevalence of smartphone usage in the country. Recent reports reveal that several million people in Nigeria regularly use social media. Therefore, digital communication has become an essential part of political campaigns in the country. In the 2023 general elections, Nigerian political parties used digital media extensively to spread their manifestos, hold rallies virtually, connect with supporters, raise funds for their campaigns, and rebut claims of their opponents (Ubong et al., 2024).
Digital Campaign Strategies are those approaches used by politicians to utilize the available online technology and social media platforms to accomplish their political goals within an electioneering process. Some of these strategies include online advertising, influencer marketing, online fundraising, live streaming, political branding, data-driven voter engagement, and digital mobilization. While conventional campaigns rely mostly on physical gatherings and traditional media for communication, the ability of digital campaigns to connect politicians to the electorate immediately without any delay has made politics more participatory, especially for the youth segment of Nigeria's electorate. (Ilaya & Nwanne, 2025).
The presidential election in Nigeria in 2023 showed that the role of digital campaigning in politics is becoming stronger. Various political parties have developed advanced methods of communication in order to reach out to undecided voters, create political discussions, and recruit volunteers. The Internet became the platform where political discussions and campaign messages were being held. Digital branding, which was particularly effective among urban youth, played a major role in making people politically aware and active (Okoro, 2025).
Nevertheless, there are some obstacles associated with digital campaigning. Misinformation, fake news, hate speech, cyberbullying, disinformation campaigns, and lack of equal access to the internet pose serious threats to electoral integrity. In addition, heavy reliance on digital media channels can result in exclusion of the population in rural areas due to poor connectivity. Political financing and targeted political advertising are other issues that need special attention. (Nwangwu, 2025).
According to research, digital campaign strategies should consider not only technology but also the credibility of their messages, voters' trust and political environment. To be effective, digital campaigns need to provide valid information and proper communication strategy, engage their audiences and adhere to election laws and regulations. In light of Nigeria's democratic growth, the link between digital campaign strategies and electoral success becomes more relevant for political scientists, political parties, policymakers and electoral management organizations (Ahmad et al., 2025).
Against this backdrop, this research explores the impact of digital campaign strategies on electoral success in Nigeria. This research aims at investigating the impact of use of digital communication technologies by politicians to influence the behavior of voters and electoral success and the challenges of digital political campaigns.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political campaigning in Nigeria has been changed due to the digital revolution, but there is still ambiguity about how much influence the digital campaigning efforts have on electoral success. Despite the fact that political parties engage in social media campaigns, advertising, branding, and voter mobilization using digital means, electoral success is still affected by various other elements, such as ethnicity, religion, money politics, incumbency, and socio-economic issues. Secondly, there is concern about the validity and objectivity of digital campaigning in view of the growing prevalence of misinformation, fake news, and political propaganda on the internet. The fact that urban and rural areas do not have equal access to the internet infrastructure also renders the process less effective as far as digital political communication is concerned.
While it is true that several recent researches have been carried out with regards to the role of digital political communication in the 2023 Nigerian elections, it is also important to conduct more research regarding the influence of digital campaign strategies in determining the outcome of elections in a democratic nation such as Nigeria.
