Over the years, the role of the internet in enhancing teaching and learning in institutions of higher learning in the entire world has significantly increased. Academic engagement is basically the measure of how actively and willingly students participate, get interested and commit themselves to the learning activities. It covers behavioural engagement (going to school and joining in), cognitive engagement (really learning and thinking critically), and emotional engagement (having an interest and being motivated to learn). In higher education, one of the biggest factors influencing students' engagement is their access to dependable academic resources, and about 90% of these resources are available online. The adoption of the digital education system in Nigeria has revealed major deficiencies in infrastructure, especially in terms of internet connectivity. Students have had to use their personal internet data because most universities do not have broadband internet connection; this has been costly and unreliable for the students. According to recent studies, unstable internet connectivity hinders students’ ability to access library resources, engage in discussion forums, and undertake their academic work in time (Sanni et al., 2025)..
Additionally, poor connectivity hinders the quality of academic interactions that take place between the students and the lecturer. There should be constant connectivity for successful real-time communication, discussion, and interaction in the virtual learning system. Students who lack constant connectivity will fail to get adequate explanations during online classes or even engage in academic discussions. This results in poor knowledge of the course materials and low academic confidence. Poor internet connectivity has been found to cause low participation levels among students and incomplete academic tasks (Sanni et al., 2025).
Moreover, the internet cost in Nigeria also causes the issue of academic disengagement. Most of the students use the subscription of mobile data packages, which are too expensive for their budget. It is because of this that most students have limited access to e-learning materials, particularly those belonging to lower economic levels. There exists an information gap between students who have the financial capability of accessing the internet regularly and those who lack this capacity. The consequence of this is that such students are unable to engage academically.
The recent study also sheds light on the fact that lack of good internet connection influences the psychological and emotional engagement of the learners in academic activity. Continuous disturbances in online learning sessions may cause frustration, stress, and demotivation for participation in academic activities. Frequent failure to access the academic content owing to lack of network may make learners disinterested in online learning sessions which ultimately makes them less emotionally involved in academic activities.
Furthermore, academic engagement is significantly associated with how easily students can obtain learning resources and actively engage with academic communities. With regard to Nigerian higher institutions, many academic subjects currently require students to hand in assignments online, take part in virtual interactions, and carry out internet-based research. This problem makes it difficult for students to accomplish these activities successfully. This is because poor internet connectivity has been seen to hinder students from meeting deadlines, carrying out online research, and collaborating academically (Sanni et al., 2025).
In spite of all these difficulties, the students in Nigerian institutions of higher learning have adopted some means of coping with their poor internet connectivity. These include downloading of academic information when there is good internet connectivity, use of computer labs in the university, teamwork with fellow students, and utilization of internet services when it is not peak time. While this helps to mitigate the effect of poor internet connectivity, the problems still remain to some extent.
The problem of internet connection is not only an infrastructural one in the context of Nigerian educational institutions. Most schools lack adequate investments in their ICT infrastructure, such as Wi-Fi and broadband services. The inability to provide adequate infrastructural support makes any attempts at integrating ICT into learning processes made by universities unsuccessful.
In addition, the world trends in education reveal that digital learning is now a crucial aspect in academic development. The countries that have reliable internet facilities have succeeded in implementing blended learning system that boosts academic engagement and performance. On the other hand, in Nigeria, unreliable internet connectivity has made it difficult for digital education system to be fully implemented.
Poor internet connectivity poses major obstacles for students' academic engagement in Nigeria. This problem influences not only the process of learning via the Internet but also students' interactions with lecturers and other students and access to academic materials. Although students try to cope with such obstacles using various methods, the negative effect of internet access still influences their academic lives. Recent research stresses the importance of the digital environment development to promote the students' academic engagement in Nigeria (Sanni et al., 2025).
