CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
Fashion has developed into a critical element of modern society, not only as a form of dressing up oneself but as a tool for expressing oneself, cultural background, socio-economic status, and personal ideologies. Fashion plays a critical role in the choice of clothing, interaction with others, and self-identity among young people especially students. The fashion industry in Nigeria has grown rapidly over time due to increased social media use and fashion awareness. Recent studies have shown that fashion trends greatly affect the fashion preference among young people because they help define their perception of beauty, social acceptance, and self-identity (Kim & Hall, 2024).
Fashion trends represent the fashionable style of clothes, accessories, colors, and designs that become popular during a certain period of time. Fashion trends can be caused by various factors, including fashion designers, celebrities, digital media, influencers, cultural shifts, and consumers’ tastes. Nowadays, Nigerian students become familiar with both local and foreign fashion trends via social media networks such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and online stores. The frequent availability of fashion items through digital media allows students to copy fashion trends and include them into their wardrobes. According to recent studies, digital media becomes one of the most powerful predictors of fashion consumption and clothing behaviors among youth (Jin & Ryu, 2024).
The style of clothes students dress up in is a result of various factors including personal preferences, cultural values, peer relationships, socio-economic status, religious beliefs, and institutional policies. Nevertheless, fashion has become increasingly significant as one of the determinants of dress patterns among Nigerian university students. The reason why students wear fashionable clothes is that they want to attract attention, feel more confident and become part of the peer group. Studies on fashion consumption in recent times indicate that fashion consumption among university students is related to identity creation and peer interactions (Liu, Wang, & Chen, 2024).
Additionally, the power of social media has made the propagation of fashion trends even faster among Nigerian college students. The use of social networking sites exposes them to many famous people, whose dressing sense usually becomes an inspiration for the followers. With the help of photos, videos, ads, and fashion campaigns, students get continuous information about the latest fashions that influence their buying and dressing choices. Recent studies conducted in 2024 found that exposure to social media is an important predictor of fashion consciousness and impulsive clothing purchases (Algharabat & Rana, 2024).
Peer pressure is another important sociological factor involved in students’ fashion. Institutions of learning create an environment where students have interactions with their peers on a regular basis and influence their attitudes, behaviour, and lifestyles. According to the social learning theory, people acquire new behaviours by observation of others whom they look up to or regard as socially successful. Thus, students tend to wear fashionable clothes as means of following peer expectations and gaining social approval from their peers. Peer pressure has been proven to be one of the most influential factors in clothing preferences of young people (Kim & Hall, 2024).
The economic factors play an equal role in the connection between fashion trends and students’ attire preferences. Even though most students aspire to keep up with the trends in fashion, their buying habits are often limited due to economic constraints. While some students depend on cheaper fashion brands from their locality, thrift clothes, or discounted clothes online, there are those who invest huge sums of money in order to have the branded clothes and other accessories that conform to the trends.
Cultural and religious beliefs still affect students’ dressing patterns regardless of the level of globalization that is taking place. The varied cultural history of Nigeria promotes modesty and cultural dress for many communities, but schools may also adopt dress codes meant to instill discipline and academic decorum. However, sometimes the fashion trends that emerge globally pose conflicts with the rules and cultures, causing a lot of discussion about proper student dress. Contemporary studies on culture have noted that globalization has led to fashion identities that embrace both traditional and modern dresses (UNESCO, 2024).
From the sociological point of view, Symbolic Interactionism helps to understand that dressing is a symbolic way of conveying messages about oneself to other people. Students make use of fashion in order to convey their confidence, social position, personality traits, and affiliation to groups. Also, according to Consumer Culture Theory, fashion is influenced by social, economic, and cultural factors affecting the process of consumption in general. Thus, it becomes clear that fashion is not only physical but also an important part of social interaction, identity formation, and cultural expressions. Modern sociological research shows that fashion consumption of young people is related to globalization and digital communication (Liu et al., 2024).
Over the years, the Nigerian fashion industry has grown remarkably, offering substantial support for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. The rising popularity of Nigerian fashion brands, fashion exhibitions, entertainment industries, and digital marketing has increased the students' access to fashionable clothes, as well as promotion of indigenous fashion brands. However, due to the increasing commercialization of fashion and competition among clothing retailers to influence the young generation via fashion-related advertising and influence marketing, students have been affected negatively. According to current industry reports, Nigeria has become one of the fastest-growing fashion markets in Africa thanks to the youthful consumers and e-commerce (International Trade Centre, 2024).
Even though fashion has been playing an important role in students' lives lately, several concerns have emerged about the effect of fashion on students' financial choices, academic performance, self-respect, body perception, and conformation to the institutional standards. On one hand, fashion offers creativity and expression; however, too much attention to the looks of an individual can make the person compete, become materialistic, and compare themselves with others. Thus, there is a need to evaluate the extent of the influence of fashion trends on students' clothing choices. In this regard, the present research aims to explore the influence of fashion trends on students' clothing choices in Nigeria. Particularly, the study will focus on the roles of social media, peer pressure, economic conditions, cultural values, and preferences of students in their dressing choices. The results obtained during the research will provide an additional contribution to the existing literature on youth psychology, consumer culture, and fashion trends while giving valuable data to the stakeholders in the field in Nigeria (World Bank, 2024; UNESCO, 2024).
