1.1 Background to the Study
The introduction of digital technology has led to significant transformations in the way religion is practiced worldwide. The traditional forms of religious assemblies held in physical places such as churches, mosques, and temples have now been extended to virtual platforms using digital technologies. The term "Digital Church" denotes the application of digital technologies including social media, websites, mobile applications, and live streaming services for organizing religious practices, teaching, and social interaction (Parker, 2023). Likewise, "Online Worship" can be defined as an activity wherein individuals participate in the process of religious worship through digital technologies.
The emergence of the digital church and worship has picked up considerable momentum, especially after the outbreak of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, which forced many religious organizations globally to adopt the digital medium in conducting their activities. The adoption of digital worship has been an imperative aspect for most churches, even in times after the pandemic. The practice has become a dominant aspect of most religions across the globe, especially in Nigeria, due to its increasing digitization.
Nevertheless, despite its rising popularity, the issue of the digital church poses many queries concerning its effects on worship activities, community interaction, and spirituality in general. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to investigate the concept of the digital church and online worship as an effective means for fostering spirituality and continuity of religion among Nigerians.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Digital technology in worship, while giving people a chance to worship without physically being in a church, digital worship have raised questions about its genuineness, the worship experience wok, and if it can really promote community interaction. For example, some point out that online worship might even lead to less community interactions as historical church gatherings have been one of, if not the main, practice of many religious groups. While others doubt that digital platforms can offer the kind of spiritual experience that physically attending can offer.
Religious participation in Nigeria is very much a part of the people's culture. Therefore, it is important to understand the challenges and benefits of digital worship there. Very few studies, if any, have been done to show how much impact digital worship has on the Nigerian church and it does not really cover issues like congregational participation, spiritual growth, and general religious satisfaction. This is why this research paper intends to contribute to this little existing knowledge by exploring the use of digital churches and online worship in Nigeria c and their influences on the faith lives of Nigerian worshippers.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to explore the impact of digital church and online worship on religious practices in Nigeria. The specific objectives are to:
1. Study how Nigerian churches utilize digital technologies for worship.
2. Analyze the efficiency of digital worship for the creation of spiritual involvement in the lives of Nigerian worshippers.
3. Examine the impact that digital church platforms may have on community development within the Nigerian church.
4. Highlight the obstacles and potential offered by digital worship platforms in Nigeria.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide this study:
1. To what extent have Nigerian churches embraced digital platforms in their worship services?
2. How effective is the use of digital platforms in spiritual involvement by Nigerian worshipers?
3. How do digital platforms impact the community aspect of worship in Nigeria churches?
4. What problems are facing Nigerian churches in the utilization of digital platforms for worship?
1.5 Hypotheses
The following hypotheses will be tested in this study:
Null Hypothesis One: There is no significant difference between the degree of spiritual involvement of physical worshippers and online worshippers in Nigerian churches.
Null Hypothesis Two: Digital worship does not significantly affect community building in Nigerian churches.
Null Hypothesis Three: There are no significant difficulties with digital worship in Nigerian churches..
1.6 Significance of the Study
This research is important in many ways. Firstly, it is expected to add more knowledge to existing studies on digital worship and digital church, especially in the Nigerian setting. Secondly, religious and church leaders will learn how digital platforms might aid or inhibit their spiritual journey, thereby making better decisions for the future of digital worship. Thirdly, the research will show the government and religious institutions the power of using digital platforms in fostering inclusiveness among worshippers who cannot physically attend regular church services.
Lastly, it will make significant contributions to academic discourse on the impact of technological innovations on religious practices, offering a framework for the possible development of digital worship practices in the coming years.

1.8 Limitations of the Study
There may be many reasons that might hinder this research from being conducted effectively. First, this would involve self-reports from pastors and churchgoers, who tend to give biased or dishonest answers. Secondly, the sample size of the churches included in this research is limited to churches that rely on digital technology for worship, meaning that churches that don’t rely on these technologies might be left out of the sample. Thirdly, barriers like internet dependency and access to technological resources might make it difficult to generalize these findings across various regions and economic statuses. Finally, considering that digital technology evolves at an incredible pace, the findings from this research might not be applicable in the long term as innovative technologies emerge.
