CHAPTER ONE 1.1 Background to the Study
Corruption - the act of using public office for personal gain – continues to remain one of the most serious issues facing Nigeria today as a country that hinders development. It has caused deterioration in all aspects of the society including governance, economy, and the loss of faith in the governing institutions. Some of the acts that constitute corruption include: giving or receiving bribes, theft of public funds, nepotism, and various forms of misconduct associated with holding a public office. As a result of corruption, the economic foundation of Nigeria has been weakened, investor confidence lowered, and poverty and social inequality have remained.
Christianity is among the religious organizations in Nigeria which provides numerous moral and ethical teachings against corruption that are very firm. Biblical views on this issue reveal the need for individuals to be upright, do what is right, speak the truth, and be accountable not only as individuals but also as communities and citizens of the nation. In addition, Christian teachings advocate for proper conduct and denounce corrupt governance at all levels of the government.
The church in Nigeria has taken up various forms of preaching against corruption, moral teachings, advocacy, and participation in social affairs to combat corruption. Many Christian preachers preach against corruption and encourage the adoption of integrity among citizens and the government officials. In a recent study, Christians help in combating corruption through moral and behavioral changes in society (Okonkwo & Nwafor, 2025).
Further, Christian institutions such as churches and other educational institutions take part in various civic educational activities and advocate for transparency and good governance. Some churches also cooperate with civil societies in advocating for justice. Despite the measures being adopted, corruption still persists in the country.
In this respect, the most recent findings show that despite the fact that Christianity emphasizes the importance of anti-corruption principles, the effect of these principles may be undermined by poor institutional implementation and inconsistency on the part of Christians (Adeyemi & Balogun, 2025). Thus, it is important to consider how Christianity deals with corruption in Nigeria.
Statement of the Problem
Corruption is still a major factor hampering Nigeria's development despite the widespread presence of Christianity and its moral guidelines that discourage unethical conduct. It is often the case that Christians who are in leadership roles are the ones who are expected to exhibit the highest levels of integrity. However, it has been quite common for corruption cases involving both public officials and private individuals to surface.
Even though the Church is constantly working to encourage corruption-free living, there is a significant discrepancy between the religious teachings and the actual behavior that is exhibited by the members of the society. This situation questions the level of effectiveness of Christian ethical influence on the fight against corruption. Research has shown that even though the churches are an important voice for integrity, corruption still finds ways to flourish mainly due to poor enforcement of the codes of ethics and the influence of the societal pressure (Ojo & Eze, 2025).
Moreover, the breakdown of the tangible link between church initiatives and the success of anti-corruption measures is poorly documented. Some point to the fact that churches concentrate their efforts on spiritual growth, thereby neglecting the need for structural reforms; hence, they are not able to make a significant contribution towards governance matters.
Moreover, there is a shortage of a complete evaluation of the measures employed by Christian organizations to counter corruption. There is an information deficit that needs further exploration. This research therefore intends to investigate the measures taken by Christians in Nigeria to deal with corruption.
Objectives of the Study
This study primarily intends to explore how Christians react to the issue of corruption in the Nigerian society. More specifically, it is directed towards:
Identifying the scripture passages that are concerned with the issue of corruption and integrity.
Studying how the Church has been involved in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
Evaluating the impact that Christian anti-corruption programs have had.
Discovering the difficulties that Christian organizations encounter when fighting corruption.
