CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
Pentecostalism has emerged as a highly influential force within the Christian community in Nigeria, impacting both religion and socio-economic affairs. Over the past few decades, there has been phenomenal growth among the Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, resulting in the creation of millions of Pentecostals all over the country.
Spiritual empowerment, prosperity, faith, and transformation are some key principles of Pentecostalism. These factors could lead to positive changes within an individual and might influence the economic actions of the followers. Pentecostal churches in Nigeria organize various skill development workshops, business seminars, etc. to promote economic empowerment among their followers.Apart from providing spiritual direction, Pentecostal churches are also involved in socio-economic development by making significant contributions to areas such as education, health care, and social services. These contributions may include setting up schools, universities, and hospitals to provide jobs and ensure easy access to basic needs. Research indicates that Pentecostal organizations have made significant contributions to human capital formation and poverty alleviation in Nigeria (Ojo & Adewale, 2025).
Pentecostalism has also brought about changes in social norms, including discipline, honesty, and self-reliance, which are necessary for economic growth. The principles of morality and accountability associated with the Pentecostal religion could make a positive difference in society's conduct and productivity. Recent studies reveal that Pentecostal doctrines have motivated entrepreneurship and increased economic prosperity among many people (Okeke, 2025).
However, in spite of the aforementioned contributions, Pentecostalism has also been subject to criticism. Some experts believe that the prosperity gospel, which is prevalent in most Pentecostal churches, may lead to unrealistic hopes regarding money and success. Other experts have pointed out that too much emphasis on member contributions may cause extra financial pressure. This makes one wonder how Pentecostalism has contributed to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
Thus, it is essential to analyze the role of Pentecostalism in the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
Statement of the Problem
Socioeconomic problems such as high levels of unemployment, poverty, and inequality are still very topical issues in Nigeria despite the fast spread of Pentecostalism and its presence in the society.
Although there are active socioeconomic activities of the Pentecostal Churches, it remains unclear to what degree these activities affect their surroundings and contribute to the country's development.
On the one hand, there are studies claiming that Pentecostalism helps with the process of economic empowerment and social development of society (Ojo & Adewale, 2025). On the other hand, there are studies suggesting that Pentecostal activities have a minor impact on socioeconomic issues or sometimes lead to negative outcomes (Ojo & Adewale, 2025).
In addition to this issue, there have been concerns regarding the materialistic aspect of Pentecostal activities, where prosperity teachings are emphasized, and the pressure put on followers by these practices is increased.
In addition, it is hard to determine whether Pentecostal activities contribute to socioeconomic progress because there is little data available concerning the impact of these activities on society.
For this reason, the present study will be dedicated to discussing the influence of Pentecostalism on Nigerian socio-economic development.
Objectives of the Study
The overarching goal of this research is to investigate the role of Pentecostalism in the socio-economic development of Nigeria. More specifically, this research will:
Identify the socio-economic impacts of Pentecostal church activities in Nigeria.
Describe how Pentecostal values and teachings have influenced individuals' economic decision making and their behavior.
Discuss how Pentecostal educational, health, and social welfare institutions have contributed to the overall development of the Nigerian society.
Examine the drawbacks and limitations of the Pentecostal impact on development.
