Chapter one 

Introduction

 Leadership and good governance continue to be pertinent issues in the socio-economic and political development of Nigeria. Through time, Nigeria has encountered several problems like corruption, lack of accountability, inefficient institutions, and incompetent leadership. Such issues affect the development of the country negatively. This has led to more interest in ethical and value-laden leadership models, particularly biblical leadership.

Several fundamental lessons regarding leadership and governance have been taught by the Bible. Amongst these lessons include justice, integrity, accountability, and serving other people through effective leadership. The Bible also teaches the idea of servant leadership, where a leader works towards ensuring that the welfare of his people is the priority rather than his own benefits. For example, biblical teachings dictate that a leader should be just, righteous, and humble (Adeyemo, 2025).

In Nigeria, religious beliefs play a major part in the day-to-day activities of people. Most Nigerian leaders are Christians who cite biblical teachings in most of their political talks. However, there seems to be a big gap between what they preach and how they actually behave in real-life situations.

Recently, research has shown that the use of biblical principles in government may lead to transparency, reduction of corruption, and rising in ethical decision-making capabilities (Okeke & Nwachukwu, 2025). In fact, themes of stewardship, accountability, and justice are highly effective in resolving issues of governance in Nigeria.

In spite of the fact that biblical principles are very much right on point, one hardly sees their implementation in the Nigerian political system. Furthermore, problems like corruption, misuse of power, and irresponsibility still exist, and this casts doubt on the efficiency of religious leadership. Hence, we need to look at the Bibles views on leadership and governance and see how they could help in solving the problems of governance in Nigeria.

Statement of the Problem

Nigeria has continued to experience difficulties in leadership and governance due to corruption, mismanagement of resources, and unaccountability. These problems have had negative effects on economic growth and the welfare of the citizens.

While most of the country's leaders are believers in Christianity, there exists a disparity between biblical doctrine and leadership in practice. Such a gap poses serious questions on the importance of religion in instilling good leadership traits. Studies have shown that even with the prominence of Christianity in Nigeria, the process of governance has not yielded much change (Ogunleye, 2025).

Secondly, there is minimal incorporation of biblical concepts like justice, integrity, and servant leadership in government institutions. This implies that biblical teachings are not entirely embedded in governance.

Finally, there has been very little scholarly work on how the biblical view can be applied in promoting better governance in Nigeria.
