Chapter One
Introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
Innovation and growth in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have considerably impacted human societies by changing communication methods, education systems, medicine, businesses, religion, among others. Artificial Intelligence involves the creation of computers or computer programs that mimic the actions performed by humans, such as reasoning, learning, decision making, problem solving, etc. (Floridi et al., 2023). Recent AI developments like generative AI, intelligent assistants, prediction systems, and other AI applications have become readily available, and thus ethical considerations arise.
In Christian ethics, which involves moral principles based on biblical teachings and theological thought, the development of AI introduces new ethical challenges as well as opportunities. Among the core values in Christian ethics are concepts like love, justice, human dignity, human responsibility, and stewardship of creation. The integration of AI into everyday activities leads to questions about the appropriate way for such values to dictate our interactions with intelligent machines. These include aspects like privacy, algorithmic discrimination, unemployment, and loss of autonomy, all requiring Christian ethical considerations (Cox, 2023).
Another issue introduced by the use of AI involves the question of moral responsibility. If decisions made by AI have implications for human lives, there are certain questions related to the accountability and moral responsibilities associated with the decisions. From a Christian ethical point of view, even though AI can help humans in their endeavors, it remains for the human being created in the image of God to be morally responsible.
Furthermore, the emergence of AI technology has led to an escalation of discussions regarding the issues of truth, authenticity, and deception. The capacity of AI to create text and images in a way that appears authentic is a cause of concern because of misinformation and manipulation, which are contradictory to Christian values of integrity and truthfulness (Brey & Søraker, 2024). Hence, the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and Christian ethics is an important topic for research.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The growing adoption of artificial intelligence in human activities raises numerous ethical concerns that are difficult to resolve using Christian ethics. Indeed, the implementation of artificial intelligence has led to numerous benefits such as efficiency, convenience, innovation, among others. However, artificial intelligence also raises several problems related to human dignity, fairness, and accountability. It should be noted that most artificial intelligence applications rely on complex algorithms, which are often discriminatory and opaque, making it difficult to understand how certain decisions are made.
In the framework of Christian ethics, several concerns have been raised about the respect for human life and justice shown by artificial intelligence. For example, surveillance technologies that use artificial intelligence might infringe upon people's privacy rights, while decision-making systems based on artificial intelligence might discriminate against certain individuals in areas such as employment and education. Finally, there is no theology concerning artificial intelligence for Christians to adhere to..
Though AI has developed very fast, it lacks literature that addresses the issue of the ethics of artificial intelligence especially from the standpoint of Christianity and how the Bible could be used as a framework for the development of AI. It is therefore the aim of this paper to explore the link between AI and Christian ethics..
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and Christian ethics. The specific objectives are to:
1. Investigate the ethical consequences of artificial intelligence using Christianity as a perspective.
2. Analyze how AI presents a threat to core Christian moral values, including dignity, justice, and truth.
3. Evaluate the extent to which Christian ethics can help ensure the proper use of AI technology.
4. Discuss potential ethical systems that can be used to integrate AI into Christian morals.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guide this study:
1. What are the moral consequences of Artificial Intelligence from a Christian point of view?
2. How is artificial intelligence a threat to established Christian moral principles such as dignity and truth?
3. What contribution can Christian ethics make in controlling the application of Artificial Intelligence?
4. What kinds of ethics can be used to regulate the usage of Artificial Intelligence in Christianity?
1.5 Hypotheses
The following null hypotheses will be tested:
H₀₁: There is no significant relationship between Artificial Intelligence development and Christian ethical principles.
H₀₂: Artificial Intelligence does not significantly challenge traditional Christian moral values.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study is important for various reasons. First, it adds to the increasing body of literature on technology ethics by studying Artificial Intelligence using the perspective of Christian moral philosophy. Second, it informs religious leaders, theologians, and ethicists about how to deal with Artificial Intelligence in a responsible manner within the context of Christianity.
Third, it assists policy makers and technologists to include ethical dimensions when designing AI systems especially when the systems influence human well-being. Moreover, it helps Christians and the larger society to comprehend the moral ramifications of Artificial Intelligence.
In addition, the study makes an academic contribution by bringing together theology and technology and encouraging interdisciplinarity among computer scientists, philosophers, and theologians.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The present research will analyze the ethics of artificial intelligence technology using the approach of Christian ethics. It will consider vital aspects like the dignity of human beings, moral obligations, integrity, justice, and accountability. The discussion will not include any information about technical aspects related to developing artificial intelligence but focus only on ethical considerations.
The study confines itself only to the ethics of Christianity, and other religions' views are not considered much. Moreover, it also limits itself to the applications of AI that are used by everyone.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
There are some possible limitations that can arise in this research process. First of all, there is the fast-changing environment in terms of Artificial Intelligence, which might render some of the research findings less relevant in the future. Second, there is the interpretive approach taken when considering Christian ethics, which can lead to various approaches to theology being presented by different scholars.
Moreover, there might be some challenges associated with the lack of empirical evidence in relation to the interconnection between Artificial Intelligence and Christianity.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Artificial Intelligence (AI): The imitation of human intelligence by machines programmed to think, learn, and decide.
Christian Ethics: A field of theological studies analyzing morality and conduct from the perspective of the Bible.
Human Dignity: The concept that all people have intrinsic value since they were created in God’s likeness.
Algorithmic Bias: Inconsistencies in artificial intelligence that result in discrimination or inequality.
Moral Responsibility: The duty of humans to perform appropriately and be responsible for their acts.
Generative AI: Artificial intelligence that can generate content such as texts, pictures, sounds, and videos.
