Chapter one
Introduction
1.1 Background to the study
Classroom evaluation is a significant component of the instructional process, particularly at the primary school level, where the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes occurs. In the Nigerian primary educational sector, and specifically within the Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State, classroom evaluation has been an important factor in establishing student learning achievements; therefore, guiding and refining the process of teaching and, ultimately, student performance (Black and Wiliam 2018). Despite the successful transformational impact of classroom evaluation in the educational sector, many primary schools within the area face challenges with regards to its implementation process; thus, raising concerns regarding student performance levels.
Evaluation in the classroom setting is defined as the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data concerning the learning progress and performance of students. This involves numerous evaluation methods, including examinations, oral questions, tests, assignments, observation, and projects that gauge how students comprehend the topics being taught. The results from these assessments inform teachers on what measures to take regarding their lesson plans and also assist them in identifying students' strengths and weaknesses, offering appropriate interventions. Evaluation in primary schools, which is characterized by learners at a very young age who require a structured approach to develop essential thinking skills, acts as a framework for learning (Black and Wiliam 2018).
For example, in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, which is predominantly rural in nature and where there are both government-aided and privately owned primary schools, there is even greater need for classroom assessment due to imbalances in the provision of educational facilities and teacher skills in the area. Many teachers here find themselves working in very crowded classrooms, lacking educational materials, and lack the proper training required in conducting effective classroom assessment (Balogun, 2020). Due to this, many evaluation strategies become ineffective, hence making it impossible to get proper information on the students' academic development.
Moreover, the socio-economic environment of many families in the neighborhood affects student performance in schools. Children from poor backgrounds might not be getting any additional help at home in regard to academics, and hence classroom evaluation serves as the only means for teachers to evaluate their academic progress. If classroom evaluation is employed properly, then it can be considered as a means of fostering inclusivity within the educational context..
Furthermore, not only do students gain from classroom evaluation; it also acts as a reflective process for both teachers and schools. Through the analysis of the outcomes of assessments, teachers are able to develop their skills in instruction delivery, improve their teaching techniques, and match their objectives with those of the curriculum (Balogun 2020). This, consequently, leads to a better classroom setting in terms of instruction delivery and helps improve student performance. It is particularly important in the area of Ndokwa West, which requires quality education for development..
There is, however, a dearth of studies in the literature on the influence of classroom evaluation on academic achievements of pupils in Nsukka LGA, Delta State; whereas it can be argued that little is known about the influence of classroom evaluation on the academic achievement of pupils within the Ndokwa West Local Government Area (LGA), Delta State, especially considering the influence of classroom evaluation on academic achievements (Balogun 2020). Therefore, the need to investigate the classroom evaluation practice and the strategies to improve pupil's academic achievement in this LGA cannot be over-emphasized.
Classroom evaluation is indeed among the essential processes involved in education at the elementary level, which marks the beginning of the thirst for knowledge. The influence of classroom evaluation on student's achievement is an area that requires proper understanding with regard to its purpose and challenges, as well as its impact on student's academic performance.
1.2 Statement Of The Problem
It is very important to point out that the forms applied by the teachers of the target learners to assess its students are a very vital part of the process and will tend to determine the results of this process. Actually, evaluation is agreed to be an efficient form of the process of studying since it enables the students to enhance the quality of their knowledge. To put it simply, it should be aforementioned that the process of study is carried out after teaching and before evaluation. Here, we evaluate the content of the process of teaching. This content influences the development of our skills and knowledge. Nevertheless, the content of teaching and its results are usually evaluated. It is essential for the teachers to fulfill the society's demands and undertake excellent evaluation to obtain additional data, for the purpose of upgrading their success in the future. Evaluation enables the students and the teachers to establish their roles in this process. Furthermore, the participation in high-quality evaluation becomes a sheer need for the trainers. Nevertheless, efficient evaluation may be undertaken with the help of specialists with adequate skills.
. Evaluation (like any other profession) has as well brought a lot into practice just with its many concepts, rules and many other different methods of usage. As much as evaluation can be beneficial, it can not fully help to bring out positive results and proof of the behaviors being seen in the learner. Improved quality of results can depend on improved quality of evaluation since it is only through evaluation that a result can be known. Schools should not be taken into topic of discussion without the evaluation of the entire learning process because all the components of learnings should be assessed so that teachers and learners should be able to know their state. Teachers evaluate students via continuous assessment. Time for teaching is nearly sufficient. Besides, teachers conduct supplementary lessons where a particular lesson has not been well understood by the learners, and the teachers assign tasks which are supposed to be completed by the learners. However, despite all these attempts made by teachers, learners do not produce satisfactory results. As has been observed from the discussion above, there are several issues that can explain why high percentages of poor results had been witnessed in various official examinations in relation to the handling and application of various evaluation strategies. These include lack of adequate knowledge and skills in conducting evaluation strategies styles methods and techniques, poor pedagogical practice, teacher attitude, classroom management, and many others. Apart from the above mentioned, an arbitrary conduct of the teacher in his job might result in the inappropriate application of the teaching and learning approaches as well as evaluation strategies...It is important to emphasize here that teachers are very important factors in the school, that if their training and inputs are suspect, and if their methods and techniques of evaluation are inappropriate then undoubtedly, the output of these teachers will be poor. It was for this reason that the topic, "The importance of classroom evaluation and its effect on students academic performance in Primary Schools in Ndokwa West, Delta State, " was inevitable.

The Study Is Restricted to The Importance Of Classroom Evaluation And Its Effect On Students Academic Performance Among Primary Schools In Ndokwa West Local Government Area Of Delta State
1.8 LIMITATION OF STUDY
Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire).
Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.
1.9 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following terms are define operationally as it was used in the study
Feedback : In education, feedback is information given to learners about their performance and progress toward learning goals, which helps them to understand their current understanding, identify areas for improvement, and adjust their learning strategies to achieve desired outcomes. It can come from teachers, peers, or even self-reflection and can be delivered in various forms, such as written comments, verbal discussions, or grades
Authentic assessment practice : Authentic assessment practice involves tasks that mimic real-world scenarios, allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills in meaningful contexts rather than just memorizing facts.
Differentiated assessment: Differentiated assessment is an ongoing, student-focused process where teachers use various strategies to understand individual student needs, interests, and abilities to provide flexible assessment options for demonstrating learning and knowledge
