CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
English Language On any topic pertaining to national development, English language and efficient communication are essential. English Language is the cornerstone of other national development initiatives since it is a uniquely human and non-intuitive form of communication. As a tool for communication, language can be used to shape people's personalities, declare war, oppose concepts, plans, and behaviors, disseminate, denounce, and incite violence. Additionally, it could be used to create friendly relationships, settle conflicts, inspire, educate, amuse, and bring people or communities together (Obuh and Omenogor, 2021). A society's varied groups can coexist peacefully by using English language, which is made possible through communication. Every society is always in need of improvements that will improve the lives of its citizens. A society's political, economic, social, and cultural life may undergo change as a result of human desire. However, the ways that language has been successfully employed as a communication tool to accomplish societal objectives frequently correspond with changes in human civilisation.. Obanya (2021) claims that “English language-based communication is a tool for enabling the people who make up a nation to contribute in ways that promote national development and unity." English Language is used by people to accomplish their everyday needs, national objectives, and global ambitions. Man continuously explores the seemingly limitless possibilities of english language and effective communication to address problems of public governance especially in Nigeria.. At a time when the majority of Nigerians live in extreme poverty, when the government struggles to fulfil its fundamental duty of providing security for its citizens, when basic social infrastructures like good roads, pipe-borne water, electricity supply, and health care facilities are either completely unavailable or epileptically provided, and when the country's educational system is regrettably in a depressed state, it is imperative that the English language and communication be re-examined in the context of Nigerian governance.. As the competing elites exploit ethnic and religious divisions in the fight for power and the number and scope of fatal conflicts increase, the masses are growing increasingly estranged, irate, and resentful. A significant portion of the population has dysfunctional and traumatic lives. This emphasises how urgently the nation needs to undergo socio-political and economic transformation. To achieve the expected transformation in Nigeria, the issue necessitates a paradigm shift in thinking about how to investigate english language and communication in society.
According to Adedeji (2022) As the official language and the primary means of contact between Nigeria's various ethnic groups and the government, English is essential to both governance and communication in the nation. With more than 500 languages spoken nationwide, English offers a common language for judicial procedures, policymaking, and communication. It is the language of the constitution, laws, and official government communications in the framework of governance. This makes it a vital instrument for national identity, diplomacy, and administrative effectiveness (Adedeji 2022).
However, there are several hindrances involved when it comes to the use of English in governance. While it does unite people, it also creates divisions between the ruling class and large segments of the population who do not speak it very well. The local languages are spoken by a greater number of people living in many rural areas, which may pose an obstacle to communication for those living in these places (Adedeji 2022). In addition, education also plays an important role in this regard. Although English is widely used in Nigerian schools, due to the disparity in the level of education in different regions in the country, the exposure to and fluency in English cannot be guaranteed for everyone (Obanya 2021). It is mainly poor people and those from rural communities who will have difficulties using English. This will further exacerbate the already-existing social and economic inequalities. Thus, English, apart from being helpful for promoting unity and good governance in Nigeria, also becomes a symbol of inequality and inaccessibility. More importantly, another challenge lies in the fact that it is difficult to use English both as an efficient means for achieving national unity and good governance in Nigeria while promoting the use of local languages for reflecting the cultural diversity of the country. One way to ensure the coexistence of various local languages with English without sacrificing the unifying and efficient power of English can be found in well-planned policies for integrating local languages into politics, media, and education.
