1.0 chapter one
introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
Several mechanisms for accountability, openness, and the development of quality assurance are involved in the process of reviewing teachers' job performance. The effectiveness of teachers' jobs contributes to the advancement of knowledge creation (Wilson & Floden, 2013). This is based on the idea that performance in this context refers to all of the tasks completed by teachers in order to have the intended learning impact on their students. In order to achieve the basic academic goals, it also requires how much the teachers are involved in the overall administration of the school and the instructional activities. To put it another way, the overall designs aim to achieve the desired goals and objectives of the educational system. Due to its relevance and the aim to raise educational standards, supervision has recently become both necessary and unavoidable. As stated by Osakwe (2010) The goal of supervision is to provide teachers and students with professional help and guidance that is actually focused on accomplishing effective teaching and learning in the classroom. As a supervisor, the principal offers teachers specialised advice to help them become more proficient in their specialised fields. This support is particularly evident in the areas of lesson planning or taking notes prior to teaching, making effective use of instructional resources, maintaining school records, enforcing rules, cultivating positive interpersonal relationships, and managing classrooms. If all of these factors are managed effectively and coordinated through continuous feedback, they frequently give the academic progress a clear emphasis and direction.
Based on the foregoing definition, supervisors are required to use a variety of supervisory strategies that are directed and related to the conditions of teaching and learning.. Hence, Obi (2018), However, listed a number of ways supervisors can use to clearly and meticulously direct the teachers to improve their on-the-job performance as well as support efficient teaching in schools. The self-appraisal method, microteaching, classroom visits, clinical supervision, workshops, and demonstration method are a few of the strategies. These techniques assist in achieving the objectives of teaching and learning by giving teachers feedback on the various educational system learning outcomes. It is to this the study centres on school supervision and teachers performance in secondary schools in ondo state.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The degree to which secondary schools will succeed in achieving their aims and objectives depends on the willingness of instructors to put forth cooperative effort. This is true since it is the teacher's responsibility to carry out pedagogical tasks and ensure that learning objectives are met. Some teachers, however, are unable to do their duties well without being properly supervised to determine whether their performance is up to par. Secondary school teachers are supposed to plan lessons, instruct, and assess students' progress throughout the term.. The degree to which supervisors are successful in carrying out their jobs as instructional supervisors determines the amount to which teachers fulfil these tasks. These tasks include visiting the classroom, leading a demonstration, hosting a meeting, mentoring students, and organising events. It has been noted that some educators operate erratically in their official capacities. Additionally, a lot of teachers are only remaining on the job in the hopes of finding better employment elsewhere, necessitating sufficient monitoring for efficient service delivery. The achievement of educational goals in secondary schools is hampered by frequent instances of absenteeism, continuous tardiness to class, irregular and unauthorised movement from duty post, and other forms of indiscipline.. Thus, the supervisor have to be critical in observing this abnormal situation in order to achieve the educational objectives. It is to this the study centres on school supervision and teachers performance in secondary schools in ondo state.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main purpose of this study was to examine school supervision and teachers performance in secondary schools in Ondo state. Specifically, the objectives of this study were to:
1) Find out the extent classroom visitation as a supervision strategy influences teachers’ job performance.
2) Determine the extent demonstration as a supervision strategy influences teachers’ job performance
3) To outline the supervisory role of principal and how it influences teachers’ job performance
4) To outline the Qualities of a Good Instructional Supervisor
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1To what the extent does classroom visitation as a supervision strategy influences teachers’ job performance?
2. To what extent does demonstration as a supervision strategy influences teachers’ job performance?
3 what is the supervisory role of principal and how it influences teachers’ job performance?
4 what are the Qualities of a Good Instructional Supervisor?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study would provide useful information to the government, educational agencies and school administrators. The finding would further reveal the important and the effects of supervision on teachers’ effectiveness.
Secondary school education in Nigeria is growing rapidly in number and population in recent times. The increase in number and population of secondary schools has led to an increase in demand for qualified and unqualified teachers in the schools.
Finally, the study might help in revitalizing the issue of falling standard of education as a result of poor administration while it demands proper organization and planning. Thereby making the society to benefit from the study and also help in making effective use of human and materials resource that are available to the schools in the society.
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope for this study comprised of some selected public secondary schools in Ogun waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. Both the teachers and the principals of these selected schools form the target population for this study.
1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
This study is limited to some secondary schools teachers and principals in Abeokuta. In a research of this nature, one must anticipate some difficulties to arise particularly in the process of gathering necessary data for the study.
Some of these problems may include:-Lack of recognition by teacher about the importance of this research study. Some of them might think of implicating themselves by filling the questionnaires. Collection of the questionnaire might also pose problem because the teachers might misplace them and another set might need to be distributed. Time and financial constrained might also hinder adequate research on the topic of the study.
1.8 OPERATION DEFINING OF TERMS
It is important to state the operational definitions of the concepts used or the term used in the study. The term includes:
Investigation: The act of making enquiry into a particular study at hand. That is, going very deep into a subject matter.
Supervision: This is to see that the right thing is done through directing and proper monitoring. This means acting as a check and balances to some specially assigned duties.
Teacher: Someone who makes other people learn what they may not have known. A teacher is someone whose job is to impact knowledge to others.
Performance: Action seen, noticed or felt due to its effects on other people.
