ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research was to determine the attitude primary school pupils develop towards science
The sample for the study consisted of 200 primary school teachers in Owo south L.G.A. The instrument was researcher-designed questionnaire which consisted of twelve items on pupils’ attitudes to science. Twelve schools were two of which are private/nursery schools while the rest are government/ public schools.
From the results of the analysis of the data, it was generally observed the primary school pupils have positive attitudes to science. This positive attitude to science follows this order: -
Primary four primary six primary five. It was found that age has a somewhat negative effect on pupils’ attitude towards science. Specifically it was found that primary four pupils had a more positive attitude to science than their primary six counterparts and the latter had a more negative attitude towards science than their primary five counterparts.
From the observations, recommendations were made, some of which included the need for; provision of adequately equipped science laboratories and teaching aids in primary schools, primary science textbooks that contain simple terms and typical examples for better understanding of science etc.
