Relaxation methods have gained prominence as critical instruments for dealing with stress amongst nursing students in Nigeria, where nursing students are known to experience extreme pressure from their academic and clinical workloads. The demanding nature of the nursing curriculum and the limited resources available in some educational institutions may lead to stress that impacts negatively on their academic achievements, mental well-being, and general state of well-being. Therefore, adopting relaxation techniques in daily life becomes an effective way to handle these stresses..
Deep breathing exercises are one commonly used relaxation technique that helps the body's stress system to calm down by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. When we control our breathing, the heart rate declines as well as cortisol production, which results in the feeling of being relaxed. Research has shown that nursing students who breathe deeply are less anxious and able to focus better on their clinical activities (Okafor & Adeyemi, 2025). Besides this technique comes with the advantages of being easy, free and it is possible to practice in different places such as a classroom or a hospital environment.
In fact, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is a highly contactable technique that working by deliberately tensing and relaxing different muscle groups. It assists learners to figure out the physical tension they carry with their stress and it also shows them the way consciously to let go of it. A study done on Nigerian nursing undergraduates has revealed that PMR was able to alleviate fatigue symptoms considerably and improve sleep quality which are very important for good academic performance (Eze et al. 2026). Improved sleep leads to better memory and cognitive functioning which are the main components of nursing education..
Mindfulness meditation has been identified as another effective technique to manage stress effectively. The practice focuses on staying in the present without judging anything and helps in avoiding ruminative thoughts and emotional reactions. Research indicates that mindfulness meditation boosts resilience and reduces the risk of burnout amongst healthcare students (Ibrahim & Salisu, 2025). For nursing students in Nigeria, mindfulness meditation can easily fit into a daily schedule..
Physical activities like yoga and light exercise help in relieving stress by releasing endorphins and elevating the mood. Besides making the body healthy, such exercises also give the mind a rest from the stress coming from school. Research has proven that students who keep up a steady pace of physical activity are the ones who deal with stress better and have greater confidence in themselves (Ogunleye & Mensah, 2026). In Nigeria, where not everyone is lucky enough to have a sports center near them, even small activities like stretching or walking can still have very good effects.
In summary, relaxation techniques are essential in handling stress experienced by nursing students in Nigeria. Methods like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, and physical exercises are practical ways that have proven to be quite effective in enhancing students’ psychological wellbeing and improving academic achievements. Integration of these methods within nursing courses would go a long way in helping students develop resilience.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The problem of stress amongst nursing students is becoming a grave concern that affects their academic performance, psychological well-being, and future career prospects. The sources of stress amongst nursing students include excessive academic load, clinical assignments, exam pressure, and emotional involvement in caring for patients. Students often do not have proper coping mechanisms to deal with the stress.
Some of the problems faced by nursing students in Akwa Ibom State include financial constraints, insufficient educational materials, transport issues, and long clinical hours, which might be sources of stress. Stress causes negative outcomes like poor concentration, anxiety, depression, burnout, and poor academic performance. It can also impair students' capability to offer good patient care in their clinical assignments.
It is known that relaxation techniques are useful for stress reduction. However, it is likely that nursing students in Akwa Ibom State do not have enough knowledge about relaxation techniques. Besides, there have been very few studies done on the use of relaxation techniques for stress reduction in nursing students in Akwa Ibom State.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general aim of this research work is to evaluate the relaxation techniques employed in the management of stress amongst nursing students in Akwa Ibom State.
The specific aims are to:
1. Evaluate the sources of stress amongst nursing students in Akwa Ibom State.
2. Evaluate the relaxation techniques that nursing students adopt to manage their stress.
3. Evaluate the efficiency of relaxation techniques in managing the stress levels of nursing students.
4. Highlight the problems associated with the adoption of relaxation techniques amongst nursing students.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will be used to guide the research:
1. What are the factors leading to stress among nursing students in Akwa Ibom State?
2. What relaxation strategies do nursing students practice?
3. How effective are relaxation strategies in managing stress among nursing students?
4. What are the problems associated with the use of relaxation strategies among nursing students?
5. What are the ways that stress management among nursing students could be improved?
1.5 Hypotheses
The hypotheses to be tested in the study are as follows:
Ho1: There exists no significant correlation between relaxation techniques and stress management in nursing students in Akwa Ibom State.
Ho2: Relaxation techniques do not significantly decrease stress levels among nursing students in Akwa Ibom State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This research will be helpful to nursing students, nursing educators, healthcare organizations, researchers, and policy makers. The nursing students will benefit from this research because they will learn about relaxation techniques that will enable them to cope with stress and enhance their academic performance.
The nursing educators will also benefit from the research findings in terms of realizing the need to include stress management strategies in nursing training. Healthcare organizations can use the findings to come up with mental health support programs for nursing students while on attachment.
The research will also contribute to the body of literature on stress management and relaxation techniques among nursing students. Future researchers will also benefit from the research findings through using them as reference materials. Policy makers can use the research findings to make policies that ensure students’ well-being in nursing institutions.
1.7 Scope of the Study
In this research, attention is paid to the relaxation methods for stress management among nursing students in Akwa Ibom State. In particular, the study will analyze the factors that cause stress, relaxation methods employed, efficiency of the methods, and the problems that arise while managing stress among nursing students.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
There are certain limitations that the researcher might face while conducting this research. Some of these limitations may include insufficient funding, inadequate time to gather large amounts of data, and reluctance on the part of some participants to give out true data. Another limitation is that this research will only cover nursing students from selected institutions in Akwa Ibom State.
