1.1 Background to the Study
The advent of technology in communication has greatly changed political communication across the globe. Social media is now very important in political communication because of its impact in shaping the politics, mobilizing the electorate, and shaping their opinion. Among these social media, WhatsApp can be considered one of the most popular forms of communication application used for personal and group interaction because of its low cost, security feature, and convenience (Pew Research Center, 2026).
Political communication in Nigeria has moved away from the conventional form of media such as the radio, television, and newspaper into the digital form like Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, and WhatsApp. WhatsApp in particular has gained prominence because of its capability to share instant messages, voice notes, pictures, videos, and also engage in group conversations. It is widely used by political actors, parties, and supporters in elections, political mobilization, and shaping opinions (Okafor & Musa, 2025). The popularity of smartphones and inexpensive internet packages has made the use of WhatsApp more common in Nigeria. Political information, promises, propaganda, and information about mobilizations are often shared in WhatsApp groups where they can reach thousands of people within a few seconds. In contrast to other types of media, WhatsApp allows for peer-to-peer transfer of information, hence serving as an effective tool of communication (Eze & Aliyu, 2026).
On the other hand, WhatsApp poses some difficulties for election management because it can be used as a means of spreading misinformation, hate speech, fake news, propaganda, and disinformation. Being an encrypted platform, information distributed on WhatsApp cannot be monitored, which is especially worrying for the Nigerian political environment (Nwankwo et al., 2026).
Hence, studying the role that WhatsApp plays in political communications becomes very important for evaluating its effects on the democratic development of the country.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Even though there has been an increase in the use of WhatsApp for political communication in Nigeria, its effect is still debated by scholars. Whereas some scholars claim that WhatsApp promotes political participation and civic engagement, others are of the view that WhatsApp helps in promoting political misinformation and polarization.
As a result of the lack of verification of information that is shared by people, political information that is sent using WhatsApp spreads quickly without verification and thus helps in spreading misinformation. In addition, due to the trusting nature of Nigerians towards friends and families, messages shared during election periods spread faster among people (Okafor & Musa, 2025).
Moreover, WhatsApp can be used by politicians and political groups for propagandistic purposes by sending information that aims at manipulating the opinions of the electorate.
Therefore, given the diverse political awareness and digital literacy level in Nigeria, the influence of WhatsApp in political communication becomes even more complicated. Thus, the problem of this study focuses on determining the impact of WhatsApp on political communication in Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The major purpose of this research work is to ascertain the use of WhatsApp as a political communication medium in Nigeria.
The objectives of this study include:
1. assessing the usage of WhatsApp as a political communication medium in Nigeria;
2. ascertaining the impact of WhatsApp on voters' awareness and political participation;
3. ascertaining the use of WhatsApp for political mobilization;
4. identifying the challenges facing WhatsApp political communication..

The current investigation is framed based on the following questions:
1. In what ways is WhatsApp used for political communication in Nigeria?
2. How can WhatsApp affect awareness and participation among voters?
3. In what ways is WhatsApp used in political campaigns?
4. What are the challenges of political communication through WhatsApp?
1.5 Significance of the Study
In many respects, this study is significant. For one, the study adds to the existing literature on digital political communication and the influence of social media in new democracies.
Secondly, the study provides guidance to political actors, parties, and campaign strategists on how best to use WhatsApp as a tool for voter mobilization.
Thirdly, for policymakers and electoral management bodies such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the research findings will shed light on the role that digital platforms play in elections and how misinformation can be curtailed.
Fourthly, the study can provide direction for scholars in politics, media studies, and digital democracy in Africa..
1.6 Scope of the Study
In this research, WhatsApp will be used to investigate the impact of social media on political communication in Nigeria. How individuals, political parties, and advocacy organizations use WhatsApp in disseminating information, mobilizing voters, and conducting political discourse will be explored. This research will not consider any other form of social media except WhatsApp.
1.7 Conceptual Clarification
WhatsApp: A phone app that enables the sending of text, audio, picture, video, and document messages.
Political Communication: The exchange of political information and ideas between individuals and political organizations.
Voter Mobilization: Actions taken to motivate citizens to take part in voting processes.
Misinformation: Information that is not correct, but which has no intention to mislead.
Political Campaign: An organized effort by a political candidate to win support from voters.
1.8 Theoretical Framework
This study draws its theoretical framework from Uses and Gratification Theory, an explanation of why people purposely select particular media for their communication requirements. According to this theory, people use WhatsApp among other media platforms because of immediacy, ease, socialization, and information-sharing ability (Katz, Blumler, & Gurevitch, 1974).
The second theoretical framework behind this research is Agenda Setting Theory. This theory argues that media platforms impact the importance attributed to particular political issues by the public. Exposure to particular political contents via WhatsApp would determine users' perception of issues and candidates.
