1.1 INTRODUCTION
A struggle and a clashing of interests, opinions, or even values is referred to as a conflict. Conflict will always exist in society, with the causes ranging from personal, racial, class, caste, governmental, and global. Academic acclaim may or may not be a relevant motivator in conflict that is emotional, mental, or conceptual. Intellectual conflict is a subset of cultural conflict, which develops over time as a result of disparities in cultural values and beliefs.
The tactics and activities involved in aiding the peaceful resolution of conflict and punishment are referred to as conflict resolution. Dedicated group members try to settle group conflicts by actively transmitting information to the rest of the group about their competing motives or ideologies (e.g., intentions; reasons for having specific beliefs), as well as participating in collective negotiation.
In terms of how conflict is handled, resolution dimensions are usually similar to conflict dimensions. With ideas, perceptions, notions, and attitudes, disputants' cognitive resolution is how they interpret and view the issue. The emotional intensity of a quarrel is reflected in the way disputants feel about it. The way the disputants act, their conduct, is reflected in behavioural resolution.
Finally, there are a variety of approaches and procedures for dealing with conflict, including discussion, conciliation, mediation-arbitration, diplomacy, and creative peacemaking.
Where arbitration and litigation procedures are necessary, the terms conflict resolution and conflict resolution might be used similarly. The use of nonviolent resistance methods by conflicted parties in an effort to achieve effective resolution might be conceived of as conflict resolution.
The media wields enormous power over the course of a war due to their ability to reach and influence massive numbers of people. Although there are several examples of the media's detrimental role in the intensification of violent conflicts, fair and truthful journalism, as well as media caution, are critical for the growth of every nation and the accomplishment of peace.
Media content that instils confidence and corrects misconceptions has the power to avert and change conflict. In today's dispute, the media frequently plays a major role. In essence, their involvement can take two separate and opposing forms: either the media participates actively in the conflict and is responsible for widespread violence, or the media remains neutral and out of the dispute, thereby helping to conflict resolution and crime reduction.
Despite the vital importance of the function of broadcast media in conflict and conflict resolution, both academicians and researchers have largely ignored this field. The majority of extant research focuses on the media's typically negative contributions to conflict escalation and violence. Only a few studies have looked into the current or potential role of the media in conflict resolution and peace..
Indeed, the media, particularly radio, played a key role in inciting conflict and violence in areas like Rwanda and beyond.
In the last two decades or more, a few parts of Ibadan and Bodija have been plagued by marriage conflict conflicts, especially land and chieftaincy related conflicts. Some of these disputes quickly draw the attention of the entire nation (Kendie, 2007).
In this day and age, radio programmes like Egbani Elaja on Fresh fm are powerful tools that can be used to change the course of a nation's progress and even abate and settle disputes among residents in the area. However, this has not been frequently seen in the Nigerian broadacast media, as most conflicts in the country, mostly on ethnic lines, have not felt much of the impact of media in the solution to the conflict.
It has been discovered that some radio stations permitted the use of filthy language on their airways, and that some individuals were socially intolerant in their presentation of opinions.
The function of the radio conflict resolution programmes such as Egbani Elaja has sparked a lot of debate. Many people believe that the programme exacerbates dispute, while others believe that the programme plays an important role in resolving conflict and reconciliation.
According to (Wolfsfeld, 2004), While the media can help to promote community discourse, compassion, and interaction, as well as boost the credibility of individuals who advocate peace negotiations and long-term peace, it can also be used to report badly on opponents. The media's involvement to peacebuilding and conflict resolution among residents and the nation at large is hampered by a number of factors.
Conflict resolution programmes often function in an atmosphere over which they have little influence. Government control and regulation of the media often have a detrimental effect on the media's editorial independence. Radio media are also subject to ownership regulations, which include investment returns concerns in addition to gatekeeping.
According to Herman & Chomsky (1998), Radio stations like fresh fm, which are relatively substantial companies, are owned by very rich individuals such Yinka Ayefele or by management who are subject to strict limits imposed by ownership and other profit-driven factors.
Major corporations, banks, and the government all have common interests with radio stations. As a result, they are compelled to report in ways that do not always help efforts to resolve conflicts among individuals and nation at large.
In order to stay in business, the media frequently caters to the interests of sponsors. It is on this the study centres on impact of fresh fm conflict resolution programme egbani elaja in conflict resolution among residence of bodija
