CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education continues to be one of the main tools for the development of the country and the formation of human capital in Nigeria. The quality of education that students get is affected not only by the curriculum and teaching methods but also by the overall environment where learning takes place. This environment, or school climate, refers to the set of physical social emotional, and academic factors that describe school life. School climate covers aspects like the quality of relationships between teachers and students safety discipline, leadership practices, availability of learning resources, and students' sense of belonging. A good school climate leads to students feeling safe respected motivated, and supported in their academic endeavors, while a poor school climate may limit learning and lower academic achievement (Erdem & Kaya, 2024).
Recent studies conducted by education experts have revealed that the climate at school plays a very important role in predicting the success of the learners academically. In one particular meta-analysis carried out by Erdem & Kaya (2024), there was a positive correlation between school climate and academic achievement of learners. The findings of this particular study indicated that schools with good climates had higher academic performance than those with bad climates..
In Nigeria, issues regarding the falling academic performance of students in various tests including the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) have raised a lot of interest. Issues like lack of funds, ineffective teaching approaches, and the absence of proper instructional resources have been cited as the leading causes of students’ poor academic performance. However, recent research findings indicate that the school environment has a vital role to play in influencing students’ academic performance. The school environment affects students’ motivation, concentration, active participation, and involvement in learning.
An ideal school environment fosters quality instruction and learning in an atmosphere that encourages mutual respect, cooperation, self-discipline, and emotional security. Positive school environments foster teachers who are committed, creative, and professional, while students become more participative in their classroom activities and have positive attitudes towards learning. On the contrary, school environments that are violent, have poor leadership, crowded classrooms, lack proper facilities, and bad interpersonal relationships are associated with poor academic performance and student disengagement (Akinyemi, Gbesoevi, & Afolabi, 2024).
There are noticeable variations in the school environment between public and private secondary schools, and also between urban and rural locations in the Nigerian educational system. Public schools, in particular, run the risk of having insufficient facilities, too many students in one class, poorly maintained facilities, lack of teachers, and irregular stick to the policy of discipline. These factors can affect students' academic performance adversely by diminishing their motivation and hampering the provision of innovative teaching and learning opportunities. Conversely, schools that enjoy the support of the leadership, have good communication, quality buildings, and good human relations generally have students who perform well academically, "
New field data from Ogun State Nigeria demonstrated a strong positive link between the atmosphere of a school and the academic performance of its students. As the researchers, the general mood and behavior of the students, their interaction with school staff, etc. - school climate - was a leading factor, more than even parental socioeconomic status and parental study habits, in contributing to students' academic success. That means, better school climate is an attractive factor that can, no doubt, lead to better student learning outcomes (FUOYE Journal of Educational Management, 2024).
In the same way, a study conducted on junior secondary schools in Lagos State concluded that the classroom environment was one of the most important factors determining the academic performance of the students. It was found that positive classroom interactions, good classroom management, and appropriate classroom facilities played a significant role in the academic involvement and performance of the students.
However, despite the results above, there are still some Nigerian schools facing problems concerning bad school infrastructures, insecurity, lack of teaching materials, ineffective relationship between teachers and learners, and even ineffective management. These circumstances may demotivate the learners from engaging actively in the learning process, hence having a direct impact on their academic achievement. There is need for educational administrators, policy makers, teachers and parents to be aware of how school climate influences the academic achievement of the learners. It is within this context that this research aims at examining the influence of school climate on the academic achievement of the learners in Nigeria..
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Educational performance is still a very vital measure of educational quality in Nigeria. Even though there have been continuous efforts from governments, school administrations, and other bodies to enhance educational standards, secondary school pupils are still underperforming in their examination results whether internal or external. Though previous approaches have concentrated on such aspects like curricula change, teacher quality, and financial matters, much less emphasis has been placed on the effects of school climate on educational performance..
Poor physical facilities, overcrowded classrooms, insufficient instructional materials, poor teacher-student interaction, bullying, indiscipline, and poor school management still characterize many schools in Nigeria. All these factors may hinder the motivation, attendance, concentration, and dedication of learners in their education process. Therefore, students will not benefit academically despite having qualified teachers and proper curriculum..
Although previous research has confirmed a strong link between school climate and academic achievement, there is still a need for more empirical research in various Nigerian educational settings. In this regard, this study aims to explore the influence of school climate on the academic achievement of students in Nigeria.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The key objective of this research paper is to evaluate the effect of school climate on academic performance of the learners in Nigeria.
More specifically, this paper intends to;
1. Analyze the link between school climate and academic performance of students.
2. Study the effect of teacher-student relationship on the academic performance.
3. Evaluate the effect of school safety on the academic performance of students.
4. Analyze the effect of school facilities on the academic performance of the students.
5. Evaluate the effect of school leadership and discipline on academic performance.
1.4 Research Questions
The research will be used to address the following questions:
1. What is the nature of the relationship between school climate and students' academic achievement?
2. How does the teacher/student relationship affect academic performance of students?
3. How does school safety affect students' academic achievement?
4. How do school facilities affect students' academic achievement?
5. How do school leadership and discipline affect students' academic achievement?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant relationship between school climate and students' academic performance in Nigeria.
1.6 Significance of the Study
These results will be helpful to school administrators, teachers, students, parents, education policy makers, researchers, and curriculum developers. This research will provide information on the positive effect of school climate on academic performance of students and how this can help the education policy makers to develop policies on safe schools with good academic productivity.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study centers on the influence of school climate on academic performance of secondary school students in Nigeria. More specifically, the study will address the issues of school climate including relationships between teachers and students, school safety, discipline, leadership, and learning physical environment
