Today, one of the main issues in security that the world faces is banditry. By banditry is meant, among other things robbing kidnapping, stealing of livestock, and organized violence that mainly occur in the northern and north-western parts of Nigeria. The emergence of banditry has been attributed to various socio-economic and political factors. Sometimes it is said in passing that poverty and youth unemployment are at the top of the list. According to the World Bank (2023), poverty is generally defined as the inability of a person(s) to meet their requirements like food shelter education, and health due to lack of money. Youth unemployment is a different matter. It refers to the inability of young people who are in the labor force i.e. capable of working to find jobs.
Both poverty and youth unemployment are widespread problems in Nigeria. As a result, these two factors have led to various forms of criminal behaviors such as banditry, among others. A sizable number of unemployed young people in both the rural and semi-urban areas have been used as instruments for the carrying out of violent acts by armed gangs since they, on their part, do not have any economic opportunities or social systems to support them. In fact, recent studies show that the socio-economic inequalities, which are the motivating factors of youth's engagement in criminal acts, have even been aggravated by high levels of inequalities, lack of adequate education, and poor governance structures.
However, the rise and persistence of banditry in the country have resulted in serious effects not only on the security of the nation but also on its economic growth and social cohesion. Communities in different states such as Zamfara Kaduna Katsina, and Niger have been the targets of the bandits several times leading to deaths, displacement of people, and the devastation of their sources of life. Even though attempts have been made to use force to stop banditry, the problem is still being made worse by socioeconomic factors such as poverty and youth unemployment.
