CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Since the advent and introduction of information technology (IT), computers have opened a gateway for information accessibility and have contributed a lot of tremendous advantages and changes in modes of data processing activities and in several areas of human Endeavour, thereby making it easier for organizations, firms, industries and man to carry out their day to day activities without much problem.
The implementation of a Land transport management system is very essential for the management of transport companies or transport department in any organization, such as Agofure Transport Company, Peace Mass Transits etc, for effective business operation. Hence, the organization or the company needs to be prepared in order to meet their day to day challenges and operations.
Transport or transportation is the movement of people, animals and goods from one location to another. Modes of transport include air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline and space. The field can be divided into infrastructure, vehicles and operations. Transport is important because it enables trade between people, which is essential for the development of civilizations.
Transport infrastructure consists of the fixed installations including roads, railways, Airports, waterways, canals, pipelines and terminals such as airports, railway stations, bus stations, warehouses, trucking terminals, refueling depots (including fueling docks and fuel stations) and seaports. Terminals may be used both for interchange of passengers, cargo and for maintenance.
Vehicles traveling on these networks may include automobiles, bicycles, buses, trains, trucks, people, helicopters, watercraft, spacecraft and aircraft. Operations deal with the way the vehicles are operated, and the procedures set for this purpose including financing, legalities and policies. In the transport industry, operations and ownership of infrastructure can be either public or private, depending on the country and mode.
Passenger transport may be public, where operators provide scheduled services or charted. Freight transport has become focused on containerization, although bulk transport is used for large volumes of durable items. Transportation plays an important role in economic growth and globalization, but most types can cause air pollution and utilizes vast expanse land. Good planning of transport is essential to ensure free traffic flow by designing functional.
Therefore, there is need to manage transportation operations and ensure better service, decrease routing time with optimized cost and fuel efficiency. The system is to manage and control company transport provided by employer to employees especially in a Manufacturing Industry, School etc.
1.2 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The system that exists in some transport companies, organizations, industries, firms that have transport department uses manual system.
The manual system that is being used in the industry is faced with setbacks in the following areas:
A computerized system that would automate the company’s transport Department will offset setbacks characterized by the manual system. However, to maintain efficient and error- free record processing, raw data has to pass through a subcommittee that will screen and validate it before proceeding onto computerization.
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Not long ago, transport system management was not common in our locality, because individuals prefer standing at road side to join cheap vehicle when traveling, because they believe it time consuming since they had to don’t have to book for seat(s) and wait in terminal. Also, some vehicle owner finds it difficult to register their vehicle under a transport company. Thus, most transport companies have limited vehicle fleet. 1.4 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
This project covers the area of transport management in Agofure Transport Company. This research provide options for viewing different vehicle available with different timing for particular date and provides passenger with facilities to book a ticket, modify or cancel a particular booking but does not allow the customer to modify information about the vehicle.
1.5 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The essence of a transport seat reservation system is to provide a user friendly, flexible and secured platform for travelers comfort. Therefore, the objectives of this project are to design and develop a land transport seat reservation system that will accomplish the following tasks.
Create an online system for customers to view all types of vehicle.
Create an online system for customers to view domestic travel schedule.
Enable online seat reservations.
Give online access to passenger’s suggestions or Complaint Company performs.
Give passengers access to send their complaint on company services.
1.6 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Automated: Use of computer and machine instead of people for a task.
Booking:- an act of reserving accommodation, a ticket, etc. in advance
Information: – This a data presented in a way and form that has meaning (i.e. analyzed and process data).
Database: – This is defined as the collection of stored operational data used by the application of some particular enterprise or organization.
Passenger:- a person who is traveling in an automobile, bus, train, airplane, or other conveyance, especially one who is not the driver or pilot.
System: – This is an organized unitary whole comprising of two interrelated parts working independently and jointly to accomplish specified objectives.
Management: The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve set goals.
Vehicle:- A vehicle is a mobile machine that transports passengers or cargo.
