CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is an organization set up by the Nigerian government to involve the country’s graduates in the development of the country. Graduates in Universities and Polytechnics have been required to take part in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program for one year.
The one-year mandatory scheme in Nigeria is only for those who are below 30 years old. Those eligible are posted to states distinct from their states of origin and typically work in sectors that urgently require graduate expertise like in rural farms, hospitals, and schools just to mention three, it is known as national service year.
NYSC posting entails moving graduates of Polytechnics or Universities to different parts of the country at times quite different from where they schooled or city of origin in order for them to perform their primary assignment, For instance those from the Northern part of Nigeria are posted to the Southern part of the country and vice versa. This is done for corp members to mix with people of other tribes, social and family backgrounds, to learn the culture of the indigenes in the place they are posted to. This action is aimed to bring about unity in the country and to help youths appreciate other ethnic groups.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
After graduation, most students spend extra year before they go for service which mostly is as a result of refusing to go to areas that they are posted to. NYSC presently are using manual system in their data processing which to a large extent has revealed a number of problems which includes:
(1) Omission of qualified students from been posted thereby making Students to contend with missing their service year as a result of no call-up letter.
(2) Posting of students to areas that they shouldn’t be posted to.
1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The aim of this project is to design an efficient NYSC Deployment Information system that would be able to achieve the following objectives:
(1) To generate students call up letters.
(2) Search and sort qualified students to supposed area of primary assignment.
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The research work will cover among other things:
(1) NYSC Registration
(2) Call up Letters
(3) Analysis on population of the students for NYSC posting.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study will in many ways promote good management in NYSC orientation agency. The managerial approach to NYSC registration will be automated making information processing and decision making easy. Also, this study will help the institutions to achieve the following:
(1) Have a database of all the NYSC coppers both present and the past
(2) Issue call-up letters to students
(3) Maintain a high level secured database
