CHAPTER ONE
Introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
The adoption of digital transformation techniques has become one of the key approaches to the achievement of success by businesses all over the world, resulting in radical shifts in how the company operates, services offered, and interactions with customers(UNCTAD, 2024). For instance, regarding the business environment in Nigeria, there have been significant modifications in terms of the usage of digital mechanisms, such as cloud computing, m-banking, ecommerce, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, which significantly altered how businesses operate in this country(UNCTAD, 2024). The organizations that represent different industry sectors, including banking, telecommunications, retail, and manufacturing, constantly utilize digital tools to increase their operational effectiveness, reduce operating costs, and enhance consumer appeal.
Despite the immense potential that exists in digital transformation for businesses in Nigeria, not all firms have been able to maximize the benefits. Whereas big companies have invested in modern technology, SMEs have been found wanting due to limited resources and technical know-how.
In addition, factors such as unreliable electricity, inadequate infrastructure, and security issues pose challenges to digital transformation. In essence, the anticipated productivity and profit increases have not been attained by most firms in Nigeria. Therefore, there is need for an analysis of the effects of digital transformation on business performance in Nigeria (UNCTAD, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Even though digital transformation offers numerous opportunities for organizational growth in Nigeria, there is still room left to leverage the advantages that digitalization can offer. Large firms have invested in new technology, but SMEs fall behind due to limited budgets and technical knowledge.
In addition, issues related to electricity, poor digital infrastructure, and cyber security impede successful integration of digitalization into organizational operations. Thus, the anticipated productivity gains, improved customer experience, and revenue increase do not come through in full force, and thus, require careful consideration of how digital transformation affects performance (UNCTAD, 2024).
CHAPTER TWO
Literature Review
2.1 Introduction
The current chapter analyzes the available body of literature on the effects of digital transformation on business performance in Nigeria. The analysis highlights how digital technologies affect productivity, efficiency, profitability, and competitiveness. It also highlights the issues encountered by businesses when implementing digital technologies.
It is evident from recent literature that digital transformation has greatly enhanced business processes in Nigeria. The banking and telecommunications industries are among those that have greatly benefited from digital technologies. For instance, digital banking services, mobile payment systems, and online customer service have greatly improved customer satisfaction. Fintech firms have used digital technologies to extend their reach to more customers (CBN, 2024).
This literature further illustrates that digital transformation allows companies to tap into markets that lie beyond geographical limitations. The use of e-commerce by firms like Jumia and Konga is an example of the benefits that come from digitization. Data analytics also allow for better decision-making by studying patterns of consumer behavior (UNCTAD, 2024).
On the contrary, research indicates that the effect of digital transformation is not uniform among various sectors and firm sizes. As big organizations are able to gain immense benefits through new technology, SMEs face challenges because of the inability to acquire the funds necessary, poor infrastructures, and lack of trained manpower. Cybersecurity issues form a critical threat to businesses due to their susceptibility to hacking and online scams (World Bank, 2024).
