Free tips: When to apply Pearson correlation
The Pearson correlation technique is utilized when an investigator wishes to establish the degree and direction of the association between two continuous variables. This method should be employed in instances where both variables are measured on interval or ratio scales, for example, weight, height, salary, or scores on a standardized test. The distribution of data must be normal while the relationship between the variables should be linear not curvilinear. Outliers in the data are not desirable since they affect results negatively. Pearson correlation is widely used in various disciplines including psychology, education, and economics to establish the degree of association between variables.
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Background to the Study
The work environment is one of the key factors that determine the performance of employees in today’s corporate world, especially in banks. This involves the degree of comfort and safety of employees in the work place, as well as good communication, cooperation, recognition and conducive working conditions that increase production. In deposit money banks, employees are supposed to render quality financial services to customers and ensure accuracy in their operations. This requires not only skilled employees but also a supportive environment that increases motivation.
The banking industry in Nigeria, including Rivers State, has grown to be highly competitive over the past few years owing to factors such as technological innovation, customer demands, and economic issues. Consequently, the staff members experience the need to deliver on their set targets. Research indicates that having a favorable organizational environment is vital in fostering employees' commitment, job satisfaction, and productivity (Eze & Nwankwo, 2026). This is because when staff members are appreciated by their superiors and colleagues, they can offer better performance.
The deposit money banks in Rivers State work in an economy that is characterized by high speed and where the performance of the workers is directly linked to the success of the organization. The leadership style, communication process, workload and interpersonal relations have a direct impact on how workers undertake their responsibilities. Where there is no support in the workplace, stress, absenteeism and inefficiency may result. (Okpara & Nwaogu, 2026).
Performance of employees is assessed based on productivity, effectiveness, efficiency, and attainment of organizational objectives. In banks, performance is crucial since it influences customers' satisfaction and profit levels. Performance tends to be better among employees working in supportive environments since they have a higher level of commitment and hence are able to attain high performance standards. The need for support systems in organizations such as training and motivation programs has been highlighted in recent studies. (Iheanacho et al., 2026).
Moreover, the working environment in banks can be determined by physical and psychological aspects. The former includes office facilities, equipment, and safety considerations, whereas the latter covers motivation, management, communication, and interpersonal relations. In case all these aspects are favorable, employees are likely to have high job satisfaction and low stress levels. On the other hand, poor working conditions can lead to dissatisfaction and inefficiency (Aminu & Bello, 2026).
For example, in Rivers State deposit money banks, employees encounter difficulties like workload, working hours, and customers’ expectations. In the absence of effective supportive systems, these difficulties can have negative consequences on the performance of the employees. It is therefore important to study the association between supportive work environment and employee performance. Statement of the Problem
